Independent coffee & cake in Belfast

Belfast's independent coffee scene clusters in a few walkable pockets. The Cathedral Quarter holds Established Coffee, a Hill Street fixture since 2013 that roasts its own beans in Sailortown, and Neighbourhood Cafe, which was the first place in Northern Ireland to pour Galway's Calendar Coffee. South of the centre, the Ormeau Road has become the city's coffee spine, with General Merchants pouring local roaster White Star, District serving Bailies, Boden Park roasting in the old Ormeau Bakery building, and Krumb baking sourdough and viennoiserie a few doors along.

The roasting culture here runs deep. Root & Branch roasts on a Giesen at its Jameson Street brew bar, Kaffe O ships beans hand-roasted in Copenhagen, and over on Botanic Avenue The Pocket and Town Square pour Dublin's 3FE and Wicklow's Roasted Brown respectively. Cake and bakes are taken seriously across the board, whether it is a counter of homemade slices or a full working bakery you can watch through the glass at Trait in the city centre.

Coffee & cake in Belfast, answered

Where is the best area in Belfast for independent coffee?

The Ormeau Road is the densest stretch, with General Merchants, District, Boden Park and Kaffe O all within a short walk, plus Krumb Bakery for bakes. The Cathedral Quarter (Established Coffee, Neighbourhood) and Botanic Avenue (The Pocket, Town Square) are the other two strong clusters.

Which Belfast cafes roast their own coffee?

Established Coffee roasts in Sailortown, Root & Branch roasts on a Giesen at its Jameson Street site, and Boden Park Coffee Company roasts in-house in the former Ormeau Bakery building. Several others pour respected guest roasters such as White Star, Bailies, 3FE, Roasted Brown, Calendar and Square Mile.

Are these places good for cake as well as coffee?

Yes. Most carry a daily cake and bake selection alongside the coffee. Krumb Bakery on the Ormeau Road is bakery-led with sourdough, tarts and viennoiserie, and Trait in the city centre runs a working in-house bakery you can see from the cafe.

Are any of these chains?

No. Every cafe listed is independently owned. Some, such as Kaffe O, General Merchants and Trait, run a small number of their own Belfast sites, but none are national chains.
