Independent coffee & cake in London

East London is where a lot of the modern UK specialty scene actually took root, and you can still drink your way through its history in a single morning. Climpson & Sons started as a Broadway Market stall in 2002, Nude began roasting off Brick Lane in 2008, and Ozone, Allpress and Dark Arts all run working roasteries you can sit inside while the drums are still turning. The area rewards walking: Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Hackney, Hackney Wick and Dalston sit close enough that you can pair a flat white in one postcode with a pastry in the next.

Cake and bakes are taken just as seriously as the coffee here. E5 Bakehouse mills its own flour under a London Fields railway arch and roasts its own beans, Pophams built a following on its bacon and maple croissant, and Pavilion bakes the bread and pastries for its own cafes. Several of the best spots double as something else, whether that is a rooftop farm at Brunswick East or a pay-it-forward social enterprise at Second Shot. Every place listed below is independently owned, and where we can confirm the roaster, machine or grinder behind the bar we name it; where we cannot, we leave it blank rather than guess.

Coffee & cake in London, answered

Which East London cafes roast their own coffee?

Several roast in-house on site or nearby. Climpson & Sons, Ozone, Allpress, Dark Arts, Nude Espresso, Saint Espresso and E5 Bakehouse all roast their own beans, and most sell bags to take home.

Where should I go specifically for cake and pastries?

For bakery-led stops try E5 Bakehouse and Pophams in London Fields, or Pavilion near Broadway Market and Victoria Park. Brunswick East bakes its cakes daily in-house, and Second Shot keeps a rotating cake selection alongside its coffee.

Are these places good for brunch or just coffee?

Many do full all-day brunch. Ozone, Allpress, Brunswick East and Saint Espresso run proper kitchens, while smaller spots like Nude, Dark Arts and Second Shot focus more on coffee with a tighter food and cake offer.

How do I get between the main coffee areas?

The Windrush line (formerly the Overground) links Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston, Dalston and Hackney, and Hackney Wick is one stop further for Saint Espresso and Dark Arts. The areas are close enough that walking between several cafes is easy.

Which South London cafes roast their own coffee?

Monmouth Coffee roasts at its Spa Terminus arches in Bermondsey, NoNo runs a micro-roastery on West Lane, Old Spike roasts for its Peckham site, Lomond roasts at Deptford Market Yard and Elsewhere roasts at its Deptford brew bar.
