Independent coffee & cake in Leeds

Leeds has built a genuine specialty coffee culture around a handful of local roasters rather than the chains. North Star started roasting at Leeds Dock in 2013 and now runs a cafe and general store next to its roastery, while Maude roasts small batches under the railway arches near Kirkgate and Kulture roasts on Kirkstall Road. Visiting baristas tend to point you toward Laynes Espresso by the station, which has poured Square Mile since 2011, and toward Kapow in Thornton's Arcade. Cake and bakes are taken seriously here too, from Laynes Bakery pastries to Porterhouse Cake Company slices at Stage and cakes from Nova Bakehouse beside North Star.

North of the centre, Chapel Allerton is the neighbourhood to wander. Opposite Cafe has anchored Stainbeck Lane since 2013 with a house espresso developed alongside North Star, and it has since added a Meanwood site. Nearby you will find Bluebird Bakery pouring Malton's Roost Coffee over its sourdough, and Paria pairing Cardiff roaster Hard Lines with pastries from its in-house Not Bakery. Further out in Meanwood, Three Cottages sits at the park entrance with locally roasted coffee and Wild Craft cakes. Every cafe listed here is independently owned and currently trading.
