Independent coffee & cake in Galway
Galway packs a serious independent coffee scene into a small, walkable centre. The Latin Quarter holds Coffeewerk + Press, a coffee and design shop in a 400-year-old townhouse on Quay Street that pours The Coffee Collective and rotates European guest roasters. A few streets over, the West End around William Street West and Dominick Street has become the heart of the city's specialty trade, with Urban Grind running guest roasters since 2014, Plamas pouring Geometry's Compass blend, and An Tobar Nua serving Anam Coffee Roasters beside the canal.
The cake side is just as strong, and much of it is local. Calendar Coffee, the seasonal roastery out at Barna and Oughterard, supplies cafes across the city including Magpie Bakery in the Cornstore. Hapi Bakery and other small West End producers fill the cake cabinets at neighbouring cafes, while Le Petit Delice bakes French pastries and macarons on Mainguard Street and Tartare turns out its own pastries before becoming a wine bar in the evening. Most of these places are tiny owner-run rooms, so a quiet weekday morning is the best time to settle in.
Coffee & cake in Galway, answered
Where is the best area for independent coffee in Galway?
The West End around William Street West and Dominick Street has the densest cluster, with Urban Grind, Plamas, An Tobar Nua and The Secret Garden all within a short walk. The Latin Quarter adds Coffeewerk + Press on Quay Street.
Which Galway cafes roast their own coffee?
None of the city-centre cafes listed here roast on site. The beans are roasted locally though: Calendar Coffee roasts near Barna and Oughterard and supplies Magpie Bakery, while Geometry Coffee Roasters in Tuam supplies Plamas. Coffeewerk + Press pours The Coffee Collective from Copenhagen.
Where can I get good cake or pastries with my coffee?
Magpie Bakery and Le Petit Delice are the most bake-led, with sourdough, cruffins, French pastries and macarons. Tartare and An Tobar Nua bake on site, and Plamas brings in cakes from West End bakeries such as Hapi.
Are these cafes dog friendly or good for laptops?
Plamas is openly dog friendly and welcomes walkers and their pups. An Tobar Nua, which doubles as a bookshop with canal-side seating, suits a longer sit-down. Many of the others are small rooms, so they get busy at peak times.
