Independent coffee & cake in Cork
Cork has a deep independent coffee culture for a city its size, and a lot of it is built on roasting. Cork Coffee Roasters has been roasting on a 1930s cast-iron drum since the mid-2000s, SOMA roasts single origins on Giesen machines off Tuckey Street, Three Fools roasts from a glass pod on Grand Parade, and Cafe Moly roasts on a Stronghold electric machine over on Douglas Street. That gives the city several places where the bean really did start its journey a few feet from the bar.
The cake and pastry side holds its own too. Cafe Moly bakes pastel de nata and croissant waffles in house, Lab 82 pairs an in-house roastery with a full bake counter, and spots like Alchemy and Idaho lean on homemade bakes and seasonal tarts.
