Newcastle upon Tyne has built a genuinely independent coffee scene, and most of it is owner-run rather than chain. The Ouseburn valley is its creative heart, home to roaster Ouseburn Coffee Co. and cafes like Ernest and Kiln, while the city centre packs in roasteries and small bars within a short walk of Grey's Monument and Central Station. Several of the city's best-known names roast their own beans, including Pink Lane Coffee, Tiny Tiny (founded as Flat Caps in 2010) and Flat Six Coffee Roasters, which roasts inside the historic Alderman Fenwick's House on Pilgrim Street.
The cake and bake side is taken just as seriously. Olive & Bean on Clayton Street has baked everything in-house for close to twenty years, Quay Ingredient runs a cake counter under the Tyne Bridge, and Kiln in Ouseburn is as known for its rotating cakes as its coffee. Local roasters Resinn and Durham's Fika supply bars such as Sorcerer, Assemble and Lagom, so it is easy to taste several North East roasts across one day in the city.
