Independent coffee & cake in Bournemouth

Bournemouth has built a genuinely independent coffee scene that leans on its own roasters. Bad Hand Coffee runs a roastery and tasting room just off the town centre on Norwich Road, and its beans turn up across the town, from Cafe Boscanova in Boscombe to Ounce in Westbourne and Velo Domestique in Southbourne. South Coast Coffee on Richmond Hill, Maravi (which buys directly from smallholder farmers in Malawi), Naked Coffee and Otto in Winton all roast their own, so a short walk can take you through several different house styles.

The cake and bakes side is just as local. Espresso Kitchen in the Triangle is known for bagels and homemade cakes alongside its Beanpress house blend, Fika on Westover Road builds its day around cinnamon buns and a rotating bench of local bakers, and Boscanova has a long-standing carrot cake following. Southbourne and Westbourne add their own character, with Velo Domestique pairing bikes and a rotating roaster list, Little Perth combining flowers with coffee, and Brown Dog grinding in house. These are independent businesses rather than chains, so opening hours, guest beans and bakes change with the seasons.
