A coffee and cake crawl through Krakow

This is a walkable coffee and cake crawl through Krakow, running from Kleparz just north of the Old Town ring, south through the medieval centre, into the cobbled streets of Kazimierz, across the Vistula into Podgorze and east to the industrial Zablocie district near the Schindler Factory Museum. 1. Tociekawa Specialty Coffee

Walk south through the Planty gardens for about ten minutes to Krupnicza 7 in the Old Town, where Tektura occupies an eco-industrial room of exposed brick and warm wood. The filter bar stocks up to 15 single-origin bean varieties at any one time, served on a Kalita Wave alongside Aeropress and Chemex; the beans come from Coffee Lab in Warsaw and other named Polish roasters. 3. Massolit Books & Cafe

A short walk southeast through the Old Town brings you to Felicjanek 4, where Massolit Books & Cafe fills a high-ceilinged room with more than 20,000 new and second-hand English-language books. The cafe was founded in 2001 by three Americans and has become one of the most distinctive literary spaces in Central Europe, with particular depth in Polish, Jewish and Central European writing. The coffee is specialty grade, sourced from a local Krakow roastery, and the combination of the books, the tall windows and the unhurried atmosphere makes this one of the harder stops to leave.

4. Karma Coffee Roasters

Head south from the Old Town into Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter, making for Sw. The Kazimierz address is the roastery, and the compact room carries the sweet smell of freshly roasted coffee alongside a menu of Chemex and Aeropress as well as espresso. Vegan and gluten-free cakes and tarts are baked on site, and the bar also pours house-made kombucha and natural wines. One of the few cafes in the city to roast its own coffee.

5. Ambalaz Cafe

Cross the Vistula via the Bernatka footbridge to Podgorze and take the lift or stairs to the fourth floor of the Cricoteka building at Nadwislanska 2/4. Ambalaz Cafe occupies a floor-to-ceiling glass room with one of the most arresting views in all of Krakow: the river below, the bridge you just crossed, and the rooftops of Kazimierz stretching back across the water. The coffee programme rotates through Polish micro-roasters and the all-day menu runs to a full breakfast and lunch from 10:00. A good place to sit and look at the city before the final leg.

6. Coffeece

Walk east along the south bank of the Vistula for about ten minutes into the Zablocie district, making for Przemyslowa 12 near the Oskar Schindler Factory Museum. Coffeece occupies just 20 square metres and has been making the most of them since it opened, pulling espresso on an Astoria Sabrina machine with a Nuova Simonelli grinder and rotating through lots from Etno Cafe, Audun Coffee and Coffee Grange. Coffee brewing accessories and design products from local Krakow makers line the shelves alongside the beans. A small, honest bar in a neighbourhood that is still finding its feet, which is exactly what makes it worth the walk.

All six are independent. The route runs roughly north to south from Kleparz through the Old Town and Kazimierz, then crosses the Vistula into Podgorze and Zablocie. The Bernatka footbridge links Kazimierz to Podgorze in about five minutes on foot; from Ambalaz to Coffeece is another ten minutes east along the river.
