Independent coffee & cake in Swansea
Swansea's independent coffee scene clusters around three pockets: the Uplands and Brynmill streets near the university, the city centre and Sandfields, and the seafront village of Mumbles. Square Peg in Sketty opened in 2015 as one of the city's first speciality shops and still runs a Coaltown house roast alongside a guest roaster every month. Since then the scene has filled out. Sloth Coffee Co. grew from a single Uplands site into shops in Brynmill and Mumbles, carries its own Ffilter house label, and bakes through Rhannu Bakery in the back. Crafty Smuggler roasts its own beans on Western Street in a converted garage.
Cake and bakes are taken as seriously as the coffee here. Ground Plant Based Coffee on Francis Street pours Extract Coffee Roasters and bakes its vegan cakes in house. Gershwins on Nelson Street has been a family-run coffee house in a former bakery since the late 1980s. Out in Mumbles you can pair a flat white with homemade cake at Mumbles Coffee in Castleton Walk or Theo's, while the Touring Tea Room serves tea and cake from a vintage caravan in Clyne Gardens. Welsh roasters Coaltown and Ffilter turn up across the city's better bars, so it is easy to taste local roasting wherever you stop.
