Independent coffee & cake in Glasgow

Glasgow has one of the strongest independent coffee scenes in the UK, and a lot of it traces back to Dear Green, the East End roastery that helped put Scottish specialty coffee on the map and runs the annual Glasgow Coffee Festival. The result is a city where you can drink beans roasted a few streets away, whether that is at a counter that roasts its own like Papercup on Great Western Road, Black Pine in the West End, The Steamie on Argyle Street, Outlier on London Road or Zennor on the Southside.

The scene splits naturally by neighbourhood. The West End around Hyndland, Otago Street and Great Western Road leans toward multi-roaster bars and bakery cafes such as Kaf and Perch & Rest. Finnieston and the city centre mix roaster-cafes with espresso bars like Laboratorio Espresso and Riverhill near Central Station. The Southside, taking in Shawlands, Govanhill and Strathbungo, has become a destination in its own right with spots like Verse and BAM. Cake and bakes are taken seriously almost everywhere, from in-house pastry counters to cakes brought in from local bakeries like Freedom Bakery and Wild Flours.
